Students from the marketing and investment programs visited Toronto on June 15-18, 2017. The end-of-year graduation celebration trip included visits to program-related companies and of course a little fun!
We heard from the Managing Director of Financial Services Training and Certification at Moody's Analytics and head of Canadian Securities Institute about marketing the importance of becoming designated in the securities industry. What we didn't expect to learn was how important it is to know your target audience and that demographics plays such an important role in the future of marketing!
Then we went to the Maple Leaf Sports Entertainment company and listened to the experiences of 4 marketers including, the Community Investment Officer from the MLSE Foundation, the Brand Manager for the Toronto Raptors, the Public Relations Manager for the MLSE and the Marketing Coordinator for LIVE entertainment and events at the MLSE. This panel spent 2 hours in an interactive discussion about the work they do, how they got into their role at the MLSE and other insightful advice for new graduates.
We finished our meetings at one of the coolest marketing agencies in Toronto, TAXI. Their motto, Doubt the Conventional, Create the Exceptional will be a new mantra for many students. We got a tour of their open office (including a gym, cafe, sporting area and a bar!) and watch some of their brand stories and award-winning commercials for some well-known clients. Then we had a wonderful discussion with their HR folks about what it takes to get into an agency like TAXI.
We topped off our trip with a Blue Jays game (of course), got on some serious rides at Canada's Wonderland (where we had a to hide from a potential Tornado if you can believe it!), saw the downtown sights of T.O., including a brewery tour and we broke out of an escape room!
